Modernization of Airport Escalators
Thirty-eight of the escalators slated for renewal at Sea-Tac Airport are up and running as this modernization project moves toward completion. The project began in summer 2011 and called for replacing 42 of the airport’s 79 escalators in the main terminal, on concourse B and in the south satellite, and adding two new ones in the south satellite.
This modernization, scheduled to be complete by June this year, is expected to make moving from one place to another more energy efficient, save a quarter of a million dollars in annual repair costs and reduce energy costs by 20 percent. These installations have been done in phases to reduce passenger disruption. Some of the escalators date back to the early 1970s.
