Supporting Our Community
In the Northwest, one in four jobs depends on international trade. The Port of Seattle's role in the region is critical for providing and maintaining the facilities to attract the businesses that create those jobs. Our Century Agenda Vision is to add 100,000 jobs through economic growth led by the Port of Seattle while reducing our environmental footprint.
Seattle’s seaport and airport are international trade resources for customers throughout the world, providing fast and convenient links to global markets. These activities currently support nearly 200,000 jobs. Our Green Gateway programs offer an attractive competitive edge to our customers seeking a lower carbon footprint, while they improve and sustain the environment for our local community.
Seattle has evolved into a tourism mecca because of its beauty and recreational opportunities, among many reasons. The port promotes international tourism to Seattle and Washington state because it contributes to the region’s economic vitality, creating thousands of tourism-related jobs and generating local spending that supports community businesses. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport connects almost seamlessly with our two cruise terminals adjacent to downtown Seattle, providing access for passengers headed to Alaska to take in a side-trip or two. Every cruise ship call in our harbor generates more than $2.6 million in local spending.
Our business activities benefit the community and region, but also have impacts. Through community outreach to our surrounding neighborhoods and cities including SeaTac, Burien, Des Moines, West Seattle and Tukwila, to name a few, we focus on building relationships to ensure we are making the positive contributions our mission intends.
