Letters from Veterans

Ever since the Veterans Fellowship Program began, veterans have sent letters of thanks and gratitude for being given the opportunity to participate in this unique program. Please read a letter from a recent Veterans Fellow who has found full-time employment.

October 29, 2009

Veterans are not looking for a hand out. What they want is an opportunity, however brief, to demonstrate that the skills they cultivated in the military are valuable to civilian employers. The Port of Seattle understands this. I hope other organizations look to the Port's example.

As I write this letter I look back at my fellowship and how all of this fell into place so perfectly. I attended a job fair and met Leonora Palana from the Port's Human Resources and Development department. She immediately made me interested in the fellowship program, it's benefits and the civilian experience I would gain. I waited patiently to find out if I was accepted into the program and I received the notification just as my family and I arrived in Puerto Rico for a family vacation. Needless to say that made our vacation that much better. Thanks Leonora!

As you may know today, September 30, 2009, is my last day at the Port. I want to thank all of you for your support and this amazing opportunity. The Veterans Fellowship Program is an experience that I will never forget. You all have given me the chance to make the transition from military to civilian life so much easier. While at the Port I have learned so much. I can definitely say that my computer skills have improved and now I have a good understanding of how your wonderful company works.

During my internship at the Port I was able to secure a job at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard as a Hydraulic Mechanic. As I prepare to leave the Port I will remember each and every person that has touched my life during this experience. Thanks for all that you have done for me and my family, everyone has truly been a blessing to us.

Your Favorite Sailor,
