The Century Agenda

Starting in 2008, three years in advance of the Port’s 100th birthday, the Port began creating a “Century Agenda” — building a comprehensive vision and strategic plan that focuses on the Port’s next quarter-century of business and operations. The goal of the Century Agenda is to refresh the Port’s strategic plan, using a process that builds upon the accomplishments of the past century with a visionary look forward to the emerging challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. There will be multiple elements to the Century Agenda planning process, including Port employee engagement, scoping and scenario forecasting, public outreach opportunities and planning with the major lines of business.

Expert Panels

To kick off the Century Agenda strategic planning process the Port held a series of expert panel meetings with local stakeholders from various fields. There were four expert panels, each one focusing on an important topic area: Green Port Strategy, Social Responsibility, Real Estate and Land Use, and Funding Policy and Strategy. An initial joint session of the four panels was held in July of 2008, and the panels continued to meet separately over the four months that followed to develop their recommendations by December 2008.

Participating panel members represented an extensive span of expertise: from the Puget Sound Partnership and United Way to the Manufacturing Industrial Council and Puget Sound Energy. Eleven meetings were held, which amounted to over 30 hours of collaboration. The expert panels recommended 22 guiding principles, five of which are shared principles that are common to all topic areas.
