In recent months, Port staff has worked with diligence and discipline to make improvements recommended by the State Auditor’s report of December 2007. Of the 51 recommendations, 24 were implemented by July 1 and 21 more will be completed by August 31.

At the same time, our focus on core businesses has not wavered. We’ve had record levels of activity at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the Seaport, and made significant organizational changes to address changing needs.

At the Airport, we welcomed more than 31 million passengers through the gates in 2007, and announced new domestic air routes and carriers, as well as five new international routes (read more).

At the Seaport, we moved nearly two million containers in 2007, and though we have a slowed economy and some new players providing strong competition, our volumes are tracking just slightly lower than last year.

We’re still experiencing remarkable growth in the cruise business—211 ships will call in 2008. This industry alone creates 2,000 jobs in Seattle and $1.4 million to the community each time a home-ported ship docks.

Our commitment to the environment also remains true, as we work toward aggressive targets to reduce air emissions and develop innovative partnerships for alternative fuels.

And our new Office of Social Responsibility is strengthening outreach and internal systems so that all interested businesses get equal opportunities to work with the Port.

These changes we’re making are intended to create a better, stronger port, so that we can help build a more vibrant, sustainable economy for our region.
