Welcome to the debut of the Shilshole Splash – our new marina newsletter to be published four times a year! Our goal is to provide you with information that will be informative and of interest to you as a moorage customer or guest at Shilshole Bay Marina. The newsletter also will be a means of responding to your questions, comments and suggestions.

Shilshole Splash will cover such topics as marina policies and procedures (new & revised); safety and environmental concerns; new products and services; a calendar of events; most frequently asked questions from our customers; and information regarding laws and regulations that affect boaters in our region.

Future editions will be available only online. To automatically receive the newsletter each quarter, please visit the Port Web site and click the “Sign up for our E-mail lists” button, then select Shilshole Bay Marina News.

We welcome your questions, comments or suggestions regarding marina operations or subjects for future newsletter issues so please contact us.

Clean and Green:

For many, the boating season begins when the days grow longer and the weather warms, and ends with shorter, cooler days. You may be thinking about a thorough end-of-season boat cleaning. Here are a few tips as you prepare.

There is no safe or legal cleaner that can be discharged into the water. Detergents are toxic to fish even in small quantities. There are many new "environmentally friendly" products on the market, but boaters should beware: "bio-degradable" is an over-used term with no standard applied to it. "Non-toxic" is perhaps a better guide, but even this is not a free pass for allowing a discharge to the water. …So how do we clean our boats?

Topside boat cleaning:
The best guidance is to wash the boats with water and a good scrub brush. Persistent stains can be spot cleaned later, when the residue can be wiped up. If you do use cleaners, use very small amounts and make sure they are non-toxic and that there is no visible discharge to the water.

Protecting your boat's finish:
The best defense against a dirty boat is a good wax. Marine wax protects against oxidation of the finish and keeps dirt from adhering to the surface. It also makes future wash-downs with plain water much more satisfying. Keep in mind that marine wax contains petroleum products and needs to be kept out of the water. For safety’s sake, make sure to keep wax off non-skid areas or other areas that could cause you or your crew to slip.

Best management practices:
For more information, check out a copy of the marina Best Management Practices (BMPs) available at the Shilshole Bay Marina office or view it online. Also available is the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance Boater’s Guide which contains other environmental tips and maps of pumpout locations.

Security Matters

It is very important to keep your property safe and avoid losses due to theft and criminal activity, and you can easily reduce your risk by just following a few simple steps:

  • Never leave valuables in your car.
  • Keep items such as GPSs, cell phones, laptops, bags, wallets and purses, tools, and other valuables clearly out of sight if left on your boat.
  • Never leave your doors unlocked or windows open in your car or boat when unattended, even if you will be gone for a short period.
  • Be aware of people who seem to be loitering around parking areas or on the docks, and immediately report anything suspicious by calling 911 and asking for the Port of Seattle Police.
  • Report any losses or theft attempts to the Port of Seattle Police and the Shilshole Bay Marina office.
  • Make sure you are part of the Shilshole Bay Marina Neighborhood Watch program by contacting the marina office.
Please help us keep crimes from taking place at Shilshole Bay Marina.

Marina Events

National Night Out

If you joined us for 6th Annual National Night Out on August 5th you know what a great time it was! This annual event is a great opportunity for you to meet and get to know other boaters, some of the marina staff and Port of Seattle Police officers. There were plenty of hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill, a raffle full of great prizes, a chance to go aboard the new police boat and live music provided by Decateur Buff. Everyone had a fun time in the sun. If you were unable to make it this year, mark your calendar for next year’s National Night Out on August 4, 2009.

National Marina Day

We held our first annual National Marina Day on Saturday, August 9th with activities including a Liveaboard Association-sponsored Swap Meet, vessel safety checks performed by USCG and Port of Seattle Police, free samples of Thomas Kemper soda, kids' activities, clean boating information provided by Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, free boat rides provided by Sail Northwest, Dante's Hot Dogs, and live music.

Boats Afloat Show:
Sept 10-14, 2008, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at Lake Union.
