Message from Sharon Briggs, General Manager

Did you know that Shilshole Bay Marina has Washington's largest population of liveaboard boaters, and probably the largest in the U.S. Three hundred boats and 500 or more people call Shilshole their home, the year around.

The Washington Liveaboard Association (WLA) comprises 13 Board of Directors and four officers that are mostly Shilshole residents. Their role is to serve the community of liveaboard boaters through various events, classes and to support liveaboard life.

The Dock Captain Program at Shilshole has been in existence for 11 years, fostering the goals of enhanced marina security, safety, environmental stewardship and boater education. A volunteer from the liveaboard community represents each dock and meetings are held with marina staff every three months to share information and to discuss issues, ideas, activities and customer needs.

We encourage you to get to know your dock captain. Their names and slip numbers should be posted at the gate and available in the office. Give them your feedback for any solutions or concerns you may have regarding your dock. You also are welcome to attend the quarterly meetings at the Corinthian Yacht Club. Meeting details are posted at the gates one week in advance.

Our liveaboard boaters represent the true meaning of community here at Shilshole. For more information about WLA, check out their Web site.

What's New

Restaurant Update:
As we announced last month, Anthony's Restaurant canceled plans to build a restaurant near the new Marina Building due to the increase in construction costs, the volatility in the market, and the ongoing economic slide.

Within the next few months, the fence will be removed, and the area will be landscaped and paved. When the economic forecast looks more favorable, we will look to lease the property for a restaurant or other business suitable for the site.

Although we hope this space will become more useful to Shilshole Bay Marina, uses like more parking are not possible because of the close proximity to the shoreline. Be assured that we will notify you of any future plans for this space before moving forward.

New Parking Permits:
2009 Parking Permits will be available from the marina office Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Get more important information regarding the parking permits here.

Key Fobs:
The new marina key fobs are now available in the marina office! As of Friday, November 21, all restrooms and dock gates were converted to electronic key fob access only. If you haven’t received your key fob, drop by the marina office and get yours!

New Bike Storage:
The interest in bike storage continues to grow and currently there are over 30 people on the wait list for a bike locker or space in the bike corral. Ten additional bike lockers have been budgeted for 2009. Marina staff will contact the first 10 people on the wait list for new locker assignments as soon as they are available.

The locker fee will be $15 per month starting January 1, 2009. The annual rate will not be available in 2009. Bikes also may be stored in the bike corral at no cost or at your slip secured to a dinghy rack. Contact the marina office for availability of storage in the bike corral or to order a dinghy rack for $5 per month.

FAQs:

Meet the Shilshole Staff and Management:
If you stop by or call the marina office, you are likely to be greeted by our helpful and friendly Customer Service Specialists. In this issue, we are featuring our customer service specialists, Jo Sutton-Perry and Liz MacCready.

Jo has worked at the marina for more than 25 years! She has a wealth of information about the marina, and having lived in Ballard most of her life, can tell you how to find the best that Ballard has to offer. Liz is fairly new to the marina, and was hired for her friendly can-do attitude and her amazing ability to multi-task—as is needed at Shilshole’s front desk! Now that you know who they are, stop by so they can get to know you too. Next edition will feature our skillful moorage coordinators. Find out more here.

Marine Power Cord Safety:
According to BoatUS insurance claims statistics, 55% of all boat fires are caused by AC, DC, or electrical appliance problems, and 11% are caused by AC electrical systems including power cords. To help make the marina safer, courtesy tags are being placed onto power cords, or power configurations, that do not appear to meet the Marina Shore Power Best Management Practices (MSPBMP). The MSPBMP were mailed to every boater in August and also are available in the marina office. If your cords have been tagged and/or if you have any questions about your power configuration, please contact the marina office for help.

Do You Know Your ELOV?
ELOV, or Extreme Length of Vessel, is the new term recently adopted at Shilshole that describes the total length of a boat including bowsprits, swim steps, railings, anchors, engines, rudders, dinghy davits, or any other equipment or parts that add length to a boat. Traditionally, the term LOA, or Length Overall, has been used. But according to conventional naval architecture, LOA describes the total length of the hull only and would not include any other parts that add length to a boat.

Clean and Green

Stormwater Monitoring:
Shilshole's stormwater pollution prevention plan is made up of Best Management Practices (BMP). The goal of the plan is to prevent or eliminate pollution in stormwater and ultimately keep it out of Puget Sound. A good example of a BMP is parking lot sweeping and catch basin inserts. These BMPs remove much of the dirt and pollutants from the parking lot left there by cars and other activities. To see how well these BMPs work, the Port will be sampling stormwater over the next several years. Washing of vehicles and boats and repairs that include sanding, oil changes, engine work, painting, etc. are not permitted in the parking lot. You may also notice PVC attachments on the outfalls and monitoring equipment housing used to perform this study.

Green Truck at Marina:
What's clean, green, energy efficient and really cute? It's our new electrical truck! It's a little like driving a golf cart, but it fits nicely into our operation. No more trips to the gas station - we just plug it in at the end of the day and it's set to go the next morning. All it needs is a name - any suggestions?

Security Matters

Boat Security:
As with any Port of Seattle property, including the airport, container, and cruise terminals, security does matter – a lot – even at Shilshole Bay Marina! The staff and management at the marina work hard to provide as much security as we can by maintaining locking gates; good lighting both on the docks and in the parking lot; and well-maintained walkways and landscaping. Nonetheless, wherever there are valuables to be had, criminals will find ways to breach security measures to get to them. Read more.
