Acquisition and Relocation

Overview

In order to expand the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and accomplish other improvements to the airport, some personal property, homes or businesses, may have to be acquired. This of course can disrupt lives. The Acquisition & Relocation Department is dedicated to prompt and amicable negotiations and minimizing hardships for those persons displaced and inconvenienced. It is the Port of Seattle's position to treat all persons affected by this project in a professional and equitable manner as per the Uniform Act.

Uniform Act of 1970

The Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Properties Acquisition Policies Act of 1970, (Uniform Act), as amended, provides benefits and protections to those directly impacted by federally-assisted projects. This law was enacted by Congress to ensure that people whose real property is acquired, or who move as a result of projects receiving Federal funds, will be treated fairly and equitably and will receive assistance in moving from the property they occupy. More information is available on both the Federal Aviation Administration's web site and the Federal Highway Administration's site.

Hardship Acquisition

Under certain special circumstances (medical problems, severe financial problems, old age, or other hardships), residents in an approved project area, who will be more than inconvenienced by acquisition schedules, may apply for a quicker process. If the owner/occupant's hardship case meets the predetermined requirements set forth by the citizen's advisory committee, the committee will review the case and present a recommendation to the Port for further action. For more information, contact the Acquisition & Relocation Department.
