The Sea-Tac Airport Noise Remedy Program has undertaken a new initiative to insulate schools, condominiums and a group of homes north of the airport. The program includes 15 schools in the Highline School District, six condominium complexes that total nearly 300 individual units, and 102 recently identified homes north of Sea-Tac that are within the airport's updated noise-impact boundaries. This initiative is a result of the Part 150 Study through the Federal Aviation Administration.
In other efforts, the Port of Seattle is insulating 22 buildings at Highline Community College. Nine are already complete. Also ongoing is the Special Purchase Option program where certain eligible homes adjacent to Port-acquired property are purchased by the Port, sound insulated and then resold.
The Port was a national pioneer in the design and implementation of the 1985 program for homes most affected by aircraft noise. About 10,000 single-family residences were eligible for insulation that significantly lowered interior noise levels. The program was one of the first and most successful of its kind in the nation.
Separately, the Port also insulated three private schools, two churches, one condominium complex and a convalescent center.
