As we enter the second half of 2010, the Office of Social Responsibility (OSR) continues to implement the 2010 strategic plan. In late June, we scheduled a second summit for prime contractors and Port staff at Sea-Tac International Airport and coordinated another truckers’ resource fair at the South Seattle Community College, Georgetown Campus. We continue to support the Port’s Veterans Fellows program which assists veterans in their transition from active duty to the civilian workforce. We provide oversight of Port Jobs, select another National Urban Fellow intern, and continue to implement the small business strategies in support of the Port’s goal of increased small business participation in Port contracts.
We will continue to dedicate considerable staff resources to the implementation of the new small business program including staff training and community outreach. Resolution 3618 was approved by the Port Commission in January 2010, authorizing a new small business program that will expand contracting opportunities for small businesses. This new initiative named the Small Contractors and Suppliers program or (SCS), will provide specific incentives to small businesses that are the backbone of the regional economy. SCS firms must be certified by the Port to be entitled to the benefits of the program. The SCS program will create a formalized method for the Port and its contractors to expand utilization opportunities of Port-certified small businesses as prime contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers. The Program shall be conducted in compliance with federal and state statutes and grant requirements, and shall be consistent with all other Port policies and procedures. We welcome your input and ideas at osr@portseattle.org.
Sincerely,
Luis Navarro
Director, Office of Social Responsibility
