A case study is a short story problem about a real person and a challenge that person faces.
These lesson plans are all based on the 10th grade benchmarks for the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR's). They are also specifically designed to help students prepare for the reading and writing exercises that are part of the 10th grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) exam.
King County International Airport planner John Current is considering potential uses for a vacant building at the airport. Students help him review options and then construct a matrix evaluating five options. Oral presentation exercise and two research assignments also included.

Students help Chuck Kegley of Galvin Flying develop a database to track information about 60 corporate planes that will be arriving at King County International Airport within two hours of each other. Case study includes a database development exercise and three longer-term research and writing assignments.

Students help Alaska Airlines Employee Relations Manager Scott Lautman determine the qualities needed in an ideal airline employee. Students must determine how to identify desired qualities based on a potential employee's school or work history. Case study includes choice of two in-class writing exercises, one longer-term research assignment, and one mock interview exercise.

Should she build a new garage or not? Students help her evaluate options, then prepare a written recommendation for her. Case study also includes three longer-term research assignments.

Students help Boeing Lead Engine Mechanic David Robinson, a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union, implement a change in the manufacturing process to make building and installing the 777 engine more efficient. Students practice communication skills and business writing to convince a crew at Boeing's Wichita, Kansas plant to make the change. Lesson plan includes one in-class persuasive writing exercise and choice of several research assignments about various aspects of the design and manufacturing process for the 777 jet.
