The Port and its partner, Clean Energy, have opened Washington's first large scale, public access natural gas station, just south of Sea-Tac Airport. Emissions from gasoline and diesel fuel engines are the largest contributors to air pollution in our region. Vehicles that use natural gas or other clean alternative fuels significantly reduce these pollution-causing emissions.
The new compressed natural gas station, open 24 hours a day, will fuel Port-owned vehicles and be available and convenient for ground transportation operators (such as taxis, shuttle vans and limos) that make frequent trips to the airport. Airport management established an alternative fuel program that requires airport departments to replace vehicles, where practical, with natural gas vehicles.
The Port has 65 natural gas vehicles in use at the airport:
16 buses that transport employees from parking to the terminalOperated by Clean Energy, the fuel station is self-service with two dispensers. It is located 19425 28th Ave. S in the City of SeaTac. Payment for fuel must be made with a Clean Energy fuel card. For a card application, contact Clean Energy Customer Service at (800) 663-4555.
A new aircraft fuel hydrant system will significantly reduce the number of large diesel tanker trucks operating on the airfield and consequently reduce the emissions these vehicles produce. The project, scheduled for completion in 2004, will install a network of underground piping and fuel hydrant units that allows fuel to flow directly from storage tanks to aircraft gates. Currently large diesel-powered tanker trucks transport fuel from the airport's loading racks to airplanes parked at the departure/arrival gates.
The new system will use smaller dispenser trucks or specialized hydrant carts to transfer fuel from the underground hydrant units to the individual aircraft. The dispenser trucks operate fewer hours because they are not required to return to the airport's fuel loading rack to refill frequently.
