Maritime Festival 2007

Subscribe to airport community events

A container ship full of free activities will be offered during the festival, which is sponsored by the Seattle Propeller Club and the Port of Seattle. Most of the activities take place on Family Fun Day, Saturday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pier 66/BellHabor Marina and Pier 62/63 on the Downtown Seattle Waterfront.

Competitions

U.S. Oil Seattle Tugboat Race Championships

Sponsored by U.S. Oil and Refining, the competition is the largest tugboat race in the world. This year, more than 40 boats are expected to participate. Watch for the special choreographed tugboat and fireboat ballet. Racing is from the Grain Terminal, Pier 86, to the finish line at Pier 62/63.

  • The spectacular Pacific Marine Expo WorkBoat Northwest parade of industry boats kicks off the races.

Watch the Tug Boat Races from the historic steam ship Virginia V This year she once again serves as the official finish line. Board the Virginia V at Pier 55 at approximately 11:30 a.m. Return at approximately 4:30 p.m. Purchase tickets by calling 206-624-9119 or by e-mail.

Cruise Terminals of America People’s Choice Award
Be sure to vote during the workboat parade and tugboat races for your favorite tug. Drop off your ballot on the Pier Apron Information Booth at Pier 62/63.

Sherwin Williams and Pacific Maritime Magazine Quick & Dirty Boatbuilding Competition
Presented with TOTE 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Bell Street Pier/Pier 66 - Industry teams compete in building a boat from standard materials. Judging at 3 p.m., with racing in the Bell Harbor Marina scheduled for 4 p.m.

Fisheries Supply World Invitational Survival Suit Races
11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Bell Harbor Marina. Fisheries Supply and Stearns Manufacturing sponsor this epic competition.

Family Fun at Pier 66/Bell Harbor Marina – Saturday, May 12

Free Harbor Tours presented by the Port of Seattle – 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
Thanks to the Port of Seattle and Argosy Cruises, you can discover the working waterfront during three free, one-hour, public tours. Board at Bell Harbor Marina/Pier 66 one-half hour prior to each departure. There is a limit of 300 guests for each tour. Stop by the Information Booth at Pier 66 to pick up your ticket. There is a limit of four tickets per adult, 18 years or older.

Vessel Tours - Canadian Navy Tugboat, U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat, Port of Seattle Police Boat, Seattle Harbor Patrol Boat, Corps of Engineers’ Puget, NRC Boat, MSRC Boat, and Sea Scouts.

Remote Control Boat Demonstrations - 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. - Modelers from throughout the Northwest will be exhibiting and conducting demonstrations.

Kids Bounces - Two great free rides from Clowns Unlimited

Free Admission to Odyssey – The Maritime Discovery Center - 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. - Presented by the Port of Seattle, come explore this dynamic maritime discovery center. Navigate your way through Odyssey’s galleries and interactive exhibits, where you become a part of the working waterfront.

Fun inside Odyssey:

  • Make a Pirate Hat – free crafts for kids inside Odyssey

  • Author Joe Follansbee will be speaking about and signing his latest book, Shipbuilders, Sea Captains, and Fishermen, at Odyssey in the Admiral’s loft at 2 p.m.

  • Free movie – “From Wharf Rats to Lords of The Dock”, The Life and Times of Harry Bridges” will be shown at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Odyssey. The ILWU, Local 19, presents the film, which was directed by Academy Award© winning director and cinematographer Haskell Wexler.

Newsradio 710 KIRO Broadcasting Live - Newsradio 710 KIRO is the official radio partner of the Seattle Maritime Festival and will be on the Festival grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meet morning host Jane Shannon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Festival Information Booth - Pick up harbor tour tickets and vote on People’s Choice Award for the Quick and Dirty Boat Building Competition.

Family fun at Pier 62/62

  • Free Wooden Boat Building for Kids
    Kids can build their own wooden boat, thanks to the Center for Wooden Boats. The Center is a living museum and visitors are invited to touch, help restore, sit in and sail some of the more than 100 small wooden boats in the center's historical collection. For information and membership, call 206-382-2628.

  • Free Admission to the Seattle Aquarium Kids enjoy free admission when accompanied by a paying adult on Saturday, May 12. See, touch and explore our amazing underwater world at the Seattle Aquarium. Get face-to-fin with marine life and discover the natural wonders of Puget Sound. what are you waiting for? Dive in!

  • Tugboat Race Announcing Stage and Race Viewing Area – This is the perfect place to be to view the tugboat races, demonstrations and workboat parade. Don’t miss voting for Cruise Terminals of America People’s Choice Award!

  • Coast Guard Sea-Air Rescue – 1:20 p.m. - Watch the U.S. Coast Guard conduct a sea-air rescue demonstration just west of Pier 62/63.

  • Maritime Discovery Map - Presented by the Washington State Ferries and American Seafoods Company. Don’t miss this fun, interactive scavenger hunt to discover the Seattle Waterfront. Pick up your map at the Festival Information Booths.

  • Display Booths – Seattle Propeller Club, Port of Seattle, Washington State Ferries, U.S. Coast Guard, ILWU, Military Sealift Command, and others.

  • Port of Seattle Kid’s Activities Center – free arts and crafts, decorate a container, face painting, and toddler fishing pond!

  • Port of Seattle Police Department K-9 Team

  • Meet “Oly” the Orca - Oly will be giving away free temporary tattoos for kids.

  • Meet Ferry Boat Poster Artist Alex Young - The vivid watercolors of Alex Young have been featured in the Ferry System's annual posters since 1984 and all of the posters have become sought-after collector's items among ferry devotees. Posters will be available to purchase and Alex will be on hand to sign them between Noon – 5 p.m.

  • Festival Information Booth and Maritime Store - The Festival Information Booth and Industry Store will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
