Jack Block is New President of the Port of Seattle Commission

SEATTLE -- The Port of Seattle Commission today elected Jack Block as its President for 2000.

Block takes over the leadership role on the Commission from Patricia Davis as the Port continues development of major aviation and marine-transportation projects essential to the economic strength of the region. He praised Commissioner Davis for her leadership as President in 1999.

"Pat Davis is an outstanding leader and advocate for the community. She is committed to the Port's goals of expanding international trade and building a strong seaport and airport that creates jobs and new economic opportunities," Block said.

Block said the Port expects accomplishments on many initiatives this year, including:

  • successful completion of a new cruise ship terminal at Pier 66 on Seattle's central waterfront.
  • construction of the expanded Terminal 18 container terminal on Harbor Island
  • development of a new passenger terminal and airfield facilities at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
  • protecting the environment and enhancing our natural resources

Block also is particularly interested in the Port's education programs to inform young people about the value of air and sea trade and transportation industries, which create jobs and economic opportunities for the local economy.

Block was first elected to the Commission in 1973 and was re-elected in 1979, 1985, 1991 and 1997. He served as President in 1996. Block is the first Commissioner with a degree in international trade. He is a Seattle native and a second-generation longshoreman, working as a foreman as a member of ILWU Local 98.

The Commission also elected third-term Commissioner Paige Miller as its Vice President.
