Port of Seattle Sharpens Cargo Focus

Marine Division Integrates Delivery of Cargo Services

The Port of Seattle's Marine Division has formed a new Cargo Terminals Group to sharpen customer focus and integrate delivery of cargo services.

The new group pulls together four cargo business functions: containers, general cargo, warehouse and intermodal. The group will develop and implement a strategy to lead the seaport to continued cargo growth.

"I have heard from many customers that our seaport needs to focus more on all the factors which affect the movement of cargo in our increasingly intermodal age," said Steve Sewell, Port Marine Division Managing Director. "I am convinced we can do a better job of serving our customers' needs and contributing to their bottom line with the formation of this new team."

Mark Knudsen, an 11-year Port veteran and its current Director of Marine Business Operations, will lead the new team as Director of Cargo Terminals. Craig Hautamaki, who has been with the Port for nine years, moves from Intermodal Services to General Manager of the Container Line of Business. He succeeds Keith Christian who is retiring at the end of June after serving the Port with distinction for 22 years.

The Port of Seattle is one of the 10 busiest seaports in the United States and one of the 30 busiest ports in the world. One day's sailing closer to Asia than ports in Southern California, the Port also has excellent rail service both on and close to its marine terminals, and outstanding labor productivity.

"In this time of unprecedented change and competition in maritime shipping, I am excited about the enhanced service and commitment to customer service we will offer our customers through this talented team," Sewell said.
