Work Under Way to Expand Security Checkpoints at Sea-Tac

Checkpoints will have more lanes, provide faster service

(Seattle)-Work is under way at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to expand security checkpoints at the entrances to airport concourses. By increasing the number of lanes at each checkpoint, the move is expected to reduce the time passengers spend waiting to be screened.

The first expansion project has already begun at the C/D concourse security checkpoint. The expansion will allow for installation of up to 11 additional metal detectors and x-ray machine. This will mean shorter lines and faster service for travelers.

"The Port of Seattle is pleased to be able improve customer service in this way," said Gina Marie Lindsey, Managing Director of Aviation for the Port. "As the owner and operator of the airport, providing adequate infrastructure is one way we can make travel both safer and more convenient."

As part of the work, construction barricades are now up just few feet inside the C/D security checkpoint. The News & Gift Shop just north of the checkpoint has closed; the nearby Alaska Airlines first-class lounge, called the "Board Room," remains open, as do nearby food concessions. The existing portion of the checkpoint will remain in service during construction. The goal is to have new checkpoint lanes installed and operational by June 1 for the busy summer travel season.

Expansions are planned for all security checkpoints and, by 2004, airport staff plans to nearly double the number of security checkpoint lanes airport-wide.
