Record Amounts of Air Freight Moving Through Sea-Tac

-Biggest growth in international freight market-

International air freight volumes continue to boom at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. During the first six months of 2004, as a result of a 28% growth over 2003 levels, Sea-Tac's year-to-date Asian freight volumes have hit an all-time high. In 2003, Sea-Tac ranked 20th among North American airports in total air cargo, and remains the largest air cargo market in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.

Exports to Asia accounted for more than 11,300 metric tons from January through June 2004, a 37% increase over the same period in 2003. Asian import volumes have also grown an amazing 18% over 2003 volumes, reaching more than 8,300 metric tons.

"This is a positive effect from the weaker U.S. dollar," said Mark Reis, Deputy Director of Sea-Tac. "It results in U.S. goods being more competitive overseas."

Total European volumes have risen by 4% over 2003 levels. Exports to Europe have grown by 9%, but have been partially offset by a 1% decline in European imports. Combined, total European and Asian freight has also reached an all-time high for Sea-Tac of more than 38,000 metric tons, year-to-date.

Consumption overseas is trending up as the broad global economy recovers, resulting in international consumers having more money to spend, which stokes demand for U.S. products. Add to this the continuing economic expansion in China, which uses a growing number of U.S.-made components in their manufacturing processes.
