Sea-Tac Celebrates Its "Bluecoats" During National Volunteer Appreciation Month
-- Airport Volunteers donate more than 900 hours each month to helping travelers find their way --
The next time you need help finding your way at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, look for the men and women in the bright blue blazers.
In a program that started more than five years ago at Sea-Tac, about 65 Airport Volunteers take turns roaming the airport in search of travelers who need help finding their way.
"It's appropriate during Volunteer Appreciation Month that the airport should recognize the work of these dedicated individuals," said Port of Seattle Commission President Bob Edwards. "They put in long hours for no pay, and bring great benefit to both the airport and our customers."
"Just as they do in other parts of our community, volunteers make a real difference at Sea-Tac," Edwards added. "This would not be the same airport without them."
Many of the volunteers are retirees. Some come from airlines, and spent their careers at Sea-Tac. Others come from Boeing and the aerospace industry. But no previous airport experience is required.
"Energy, enthusiasm and the desire to help others are essential characteristics of a volunteer," said Susan Goodspeed, supervisor of the volunteer program.
Along with the trademark blue blazers, Airport Volunteers carry clipboards with the words "Airport Information" in large letters on the back.
"The term 'deer in the headlights' really does apply," said volunteer Joyce Heikell. "For the most part, those who need help are pretty easy to spot."
Once spotted, Heikell is quick to approach those who show the signs of needing help.
"We know that traveling can be stressful. It's a real joy to provide a piece of information that helps someone relax and enjoy their trip," Heikell said.
Beyond helping individual travelers, the volunteers assist paid staff with managing lines of travelers or other crowd control issues on busy days.
