Port of Seattle's Shilshole Bay Marina Recognized for Environmental Practices

For the second time this year Shilshole Bay Marina has been recognized for outstanding environmental practices.

Last month at its annual meeting in Tampa the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) presented the Port of Seattle with its 2005 Environmental Improvement Award for the Best Management Practices the Port enacted at Shilshole. In August Shilshole received an Envirostars rating for the same practices. Envirostars is a regional program that provides incentives and recognition for businesses that reduce hazardous wastes.

"This dual recognition shows that we take our commitment to the environment very seriously," said Port of Seattle Commission President Bob Edwards. "It is also a credit to the Port staff members who keep that commitment every day."

Shilshole's Best Management Practices detail how hazardous wastes are stored, contained, handled and labeled. They also provided a materials spill and response plan, safety information for hazardous products and documentation of appropriate off-site handling of hazardous materials related to the marinas' operations. Shilshole generates less than 220 pounds of hazardous wastes per month and at no time accumulates more than 2,200 pounds of hazardous wastes on site. The Port's Bell Harbor Marina and Harbor Island Marina have implemented the same practices.
