Port Extends Benefits to Domestic Partners of Teamsters

The Port of Seattle Commission today approved a measure that will extend health and welfare, dental and vision benefits to domestic partners of approximately 250 Teamsters Local 117 members employed by the Port.

"In an effort to be progressive and provide broader health care coverage we believe this is an appropriate action," said Port of Seattle Commission President John Creighton. "Most Port employees already are covered by policies that offer domestic partner benefits and we're happy to bring the Teamster members into that group."

The domestic partners of the employees covered by the agreement will receive the same benefits that the employees' spouses receive. Employees covered by the agreement include members or the Port's police department, airport parking garage and shuttle bus employees and ID access specialists.

"I want to congratulate the Teamsters' leadership for taking this courageous step with the Port," said Port of Seattle CEO Mic Dinsmore. "It shows great foresight."
