APL Vessels Switch to Low-Sulfur Fuel
in Seattle


In its effort to improve coastal air quality and limit the environmental impact of world trade growth, APL announced it will convert vessels to cleaner-burning, low-sulfur fuel when they call the Port of Seattle. Read the details.

Terminal 5 Details

APL’s container terminal in Seattle, Global Gateway North, features advanced on-dock intermodal rail facilities and latest generation computerized terminal operations system. Dedicated in 1998, this state-of-the-art terminal is the result of a $270-million modernization and expansion program undertaken by the Port of Seattle.

Terminal Size

  • 182 acres (74 hectares)

Berths

  • Number: Three
  • Length: 2,900 feet (884 meters)

Water Depth

  • Berth 1 is -45 feet (-14 meters)
  • Berths 2 & 3 are -50 feet (-15 meters)

Cranes

  • Six container-handling cranes
  • All post-Panamax size
  • Lift above rail: 95-115 feet (Three at 95; Three at 115) (29-35 meters)
  • Out Reach: 145 feet (44 meters) (16-container-wide vessels)
  • Gage: 100 feet (30 meters)

On-Dock Intermodal Yard

  • Loading capacity of 54 five-platform doublestack railcars equivalent to two full trains for both BNSF and UPRR
  • Adjacent storage facility for 54 five-platform railcars equivalent to two full trains
  • 30-acre (12.14-hectares) intermodal yard with six working tracks
  • Assembly of full train within terminal for direct access to UPRR or BNSF mainlines

Refrigerated Capacity

  • 600 reefer plugs

Gate

  • 12 queuing lanes (six in, two out, and four reversible); eight truck scales
  • Equipped with camera-assisted and automated sign bridge
  • 10-truck parking trouble area

Hours of Operation

  • Gate Open: 0700-1800 Mon-Fri; Yard Support 0800-1630
  • Continuous operation except no yard support between 1200-1300

Storage

  • 80,000-square-foot (7,432-square-meter) covered transit shed with truck access

Maintenance and Repair

  • On-site 48,000-square-foot (4,459-square-meter) facility capable of handling all terminal and equipment repair and maintenance

Additional Features

  • Integrated real-time computer software system for vessel, rail and gate operations to improve decision making for every facet of terminal operations
  • New technologies, including automated equipment identification (AEI) and global positioning satellite (GPS), to improve equipment management
  • Efficient road access via truck overpass directly into terminal
