Senior Director, Labor Relations

Deep labor experience in the Puget Sound region

Recognized as a key player in the local Labor community, David Freiboth has served in Labor leadership most of his adult life. After 35 years advocating for workers, David decided to enter public service and currently serves as the Senior Director of Labor Relations for the Port of Seattle. David leads the Port’s Labor Relations Department which, in addition to managing 23 bargaining units covering more than 1,000 port employees, provides strategic guidance in relations with Labor stakeholders to the Port Executive Director and elected Commissioners.

Supporting workforce development and enhanced communication

Prior to his tenure with the Port of Seattle, David served as Executive Secretary of the King County Labor Council, serving the AFL-CIO for more than nine years. In this capacity, he was responsible for representing 125 affiliated local unions on behalf of their 85,000 members, serving as an advisory committee member to ALF-CIO President, Richard Trumpka, managing local staff, and serving as the primary spokesman for the Seattle/King County labor movement.

Prior to that role, he spent more than ten years as the President of the Inlandboatman’s Union (IBU) of the Pacific headquartered in Seattle. The IBU represented more than 3,500 members on the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii and was engaged in maritime and fisheries work. By trade, David is an Able Seaman formerly employed, before entering full-time labor leadership, as a deckhand aboard Washington State Ferries.

David is a member of the Washington Public Employer Labor Relations Association (WAPELRA) and  National Public Employer Labor Relations Association (NPELRA).
