What is the Greener Skies Program? How is NextGen impacting flight paths?

The only flight procedure in the Seattle airspace that falls under the FAA’s NextGen program is the Greener Skies Program. Greener Skies is an FAA initiative that applies to a portion of arriving aircraft into SEA. These NextGen procedures use GPS satellite technology to guide landing aircraft in a more precise and repeatable flight path.

The Greener Skies procedures only apply to aircraft approaching for landing from the west of the airport, and the FAA places these aircraft on traditional radar-based procedures as they are turned for final approaches to the airport.

The current, limited Greener Skies procedures utilize existing flight paths, so no new areas are being impacted by overflights. There are no new NextGen procedures for aircraft arriving from the east side, or for any departing aircraft.
