The Port of Seattle applauds the Seattle City Council for passage today of Mayor Harrell’s Industrial Lands package.
This new legislation protects industry in our region by establishing durable protections for maritime and industrial areas across Seattle. The action protects jobs and revenue to the region by strengthening the working waterfront and preventing encroachment of other uses incompatible for industry today.
Industrial zoned land uses just a fraction of the city of Seattle’s space, currently approximately 12 percent, but delivers an outsized 30 percent of revenue and tens of thousands of jobs.
“In passing Mayor Harrell’s industrial lands package, the City Council and Mayor have not only protected living wage jobs, but have also protected neighboring communities by creating separation from heavy industries and associated truck traffic,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Fred Felleman. “Thank you to our city officials for finding a mutually beneficial way forward with the passage of this long-awaited legislation.”
“With a ten-year plan to protect maritime industrial zones, businesses will have the certainty they need to plan and build,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins. “This legislation provides that framework for economic diversity and resiliency for the next generation. Thank you to Mayor Harrell, the Seattle City Council, and the unprecedented number of businesses, labor unions, and advocates for industry from all over Washington who made this progress today.”
