June 22, 2020

A portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth," Juneteenth celebrates emancipation an and the abolition of slavery. On June 19, 1865 — two months after the U.S. victory over the Confederacy, and two years since the Emancipation Proclamation — U.S. troops arrived at Galveston, Texas, a Gulf coast town deep in the former Confederate South. Commanding officer Gordon Granger's announcement that the war was over and all slaves were now free was met with tremendous celebration. Since then, Juneteenth has often been celebrated with festivities and food.

On Juneteenth, Port employees submitted their favorite businesses owned by members of the black community in our region. Give one of them a try!
