New Access Route Opens at SEA Airport Cell Phone Lot Improving Safety, Efficiency, and Wait Times

New overpass to south entrance avoids left turn delays
October 8, 2021

The latest step in the continuing upgrade of the cell phone lot at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) opens a new overpass and south entrance to dramatically reduce wait times exiting the lot, increase efficiency and provide reconfigured parking spaces. Travelers will see the new access along with the elimination of the most challenging aspect of the lot, the left turn exit which delayed vehicles returning to the main terminal.

This opening of the overpass access and new south entrance is a major milestone for travelers who will see a new route to get to the lot from the Airport Expressway. It’s the same exit, but a slight right turn from the off-ramp, to a previously unused segment of the old Airport Expressway. This unique solution eliminates traffic crossing S. 170th Street which delayed exiting traffic trying to return to the main terminal. This exiting conflict has been one of the biggest challenges of the old configuration. Traffic can still turn west or east on S. 170th St.

Other upgrades opened this week include dual right-turn lanes onto Air Cargo Road for additional capacity plus a one-way parking lot configuration and expanded right turn lane.

Additional construction will continue on the overall project over the coming months with additional landscaping, as well as sidewalks, bus shelters and traffic signals along Air Cargo Road and S. 170th Street including a new signal at the northbound expressway exit at S. 170th St.

Alternatives to Driving

The cellphone lot is still only one of many options to get to the airport. Find alternatives to driving, including the newest Link Light Rail stations to Northgate, plus bus, bike, rideshare, shuttles and taxis. Or, if you have to drive, try Pre-Booked Parking in the airport garage. In addition, if you are using the drives, Think Opposite – by picking up travelers on the Departures level; and dropping off on the Arrivals level.
