Statement on International Maritime Organization Delay on Global Fuel Standard

October 17, 2025

Port of Seattle Commissioner and Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing Member Fred Felleman issued the following statement about the United Nations International Maritime Organization's vote to delay adopting a Net Zero Framework and fuel standard for global shipping:

"Our environment and economy cannot afford any further delay to address the most pressing issue of the day. Despite the IMO’s decision to postpone the establishment of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for commercial vessels worldwide, the Port of Seattle is committed to working with industry leaders engaged in the Pacific trade. Some of the world’s most successful and progressive industries are based in the Pacific Northwest, and we stand ready to assist them with the needed infrastructure to help them meet their own greenhouse gas emission goals."
