Description of Artwork
Inspired by the 2026 World Cup games in Seattle, Sunwise and Widdershins are a pair of conical bronze vessel forms on domed and cylindrical bronze bases which attach to the top of stainless steel bollards. Each of the vessels feature a band of running men based on figures from a 4th Century B.C. Greek trophy amphora. They proceed clockwise (sunwise) on one vessel and counter-clockwise (widdershins) on the other. The surfaces have a net pattern on the cones, and there are other World Cup references on the dome and the cylinder. The tops of the conical vessels are closed off by partial spheres that look like soccer balls.
About the Artist
Judith and Daniel Caldwell are metal artists with a long history of designing, fabricating, and installing public artworks from their south Seattle studio. One of their first projects together, in 1999, was the installation of a stream of hundreds of bronze fish ‘swimming’ down the terrazzo floor of Concourse B. Since then, they have created dozens of significant public artworks for streetscapes, parks, playgrounds, plazas, housing developments, transportation centers, community centers, schools and colleges.
Judith and Daniel are both graduates of different university foundry programs, Judith at the UW in Seattle and Daniel at the UW in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
