Some summers just have a different energy to them, and this one has been unforgettable.
On June 4, our waterfront took a big step forward when Myrtle Edwards and Centennial Parks reopened after a long-awaited and stunning renovation. Together, these parks now offer more than a mile of shoreline and 16 acres of open, public space along Elliott Bay. You can stroll or roll along the reopened public space. This transformation is a beautiful example of what our region can build when public and private partners share a vision for public space. As someone who believes deeply in the power of shared spaces to connect people across our region, I couldn't be happier about what's been created here, or that it opened just in time for us to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup.
A few weeks later, I marched in the Seattle Pride Parade with the Port-Wide Pride Employee Resource Group and fellow Commissioners. My daughter, Keiko, also joined me. Watching her take in the color, the joy, and the pride of our community and knowing she's growing up in a community that celebrates people for exactly who they are is exactly why this work matters to me. Moments like these are why I do what I do, both as a mom and as your Commissioner.

And the celebration didn't stop there. FIFA World Cup 2026 brought an incredible energy to Seattle this summer, and in July, that spirit carried onto the field at Miller Playfield, where elected officials from across King County laced up for a friendly soccer match of our own. Thanks to Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson for bringing us together! It was a joy to trade the dais for the field alongside my colleagues.
Whether it's a newly reopened park, a parade full of love and pride, or a friendly match among colleagues, this summer has been a reminder of what makes this city and our community special: we show up for each other, and we show up for this place we call home.
