A quick action by bystanders and the Port of Seattle Fire Department team saved a life at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
When a traveler—an off-duty police officer passing through the airport, suddenly collapsed, bystanders stepped in immediately, initiating CPR within 30 seconds. A nearby automated external defibrillator (AED) was retrieved and used to deliver an initial shock before first responders arrived.
Port of Seattle Fire Department Engines and Aid car crews responded swiftly to the call of CPR in progress. Taking over high-quality chest compressions, the team delivered a second shock using their LifePak monitor. Following one round of compressions, the patient regained a pulse, and crews provided rescue breathing to stabilize him.
It is rare for emergency crews to reconnect with those they help, but the team, including Battalion Chief Jewett and Firefighters Procter and Torres, recently had the special opportunity to meet the officer in person.
This incident highlights the vital role of early bystander CPR, accessible public AEDs, and rapid emergency response during Cardiac Awareness Month.
