The hustle and bustle of the airport can add excitement and energy to your travel journey. But some travelers need a quiet place to escape and care for a family member or service animal, or take a break for prayer. The new C Concourse at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) offers several spaces for a quiet escape for people with disabilities and their service animals, nursing mothers, caregivers of adult travelers, and anyone who needs a spot for prayer or reflection.
The C Concourse Expansion (CCE) project redesigned and reimagined the heart of the C Concourse. As part of the Upgrade SEA capital campaign to help modernize and improve the traveler experience, the airport recently celebrated opening the new space with almost 150,000 additional square feet filled with restaurants, retail, services, and a bevy of amenities. But there were several quiet spaces intentionally incorporated into the building.
Sensory Room
A sensory room is a space for travelers who need a quiet, calm, and safe space to decompress and recenter from the chaos that can come from an airport environment. This space is for anyone, neurotypical or neurodivergent. It is designed with space for different needs and elements that entice different senses. The colors boast fun patterns and color blocking, giving visual appeal to the room. The different felt-like textures add a touchpoint and grounding effect.
The Sensory Room is located on the Third Floor by the Lookout at C, sandwiched in between the Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Room and Nursing Room. This new room is the second Sensory Room available at the airport. The first is located on the Train Level at the A Station.
This space also houses a beautiful new 6x8 foot glass tile mosaic art piece by Baso Fibonacci and Alex Sandvoss in collaboration with Tieton Mosaic called “Hypnagogia.” Learn more about the new art in the CCE.
Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Room
The Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Room welcomes anyone, anytime who wants a place of respite to pray, meditate, or reflect. It is a safe space that accommodates people of all walks of life, faiths, and belief systems.
The Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Room is located on the Third Floor next to the Lookout at C, and next door to the Sensory Room. It comes equipped with a quiet, custom-lit space with different types of seating, a foot washing station, a kneeling area, and more.
The CCE project enlisted the help of local religious leaders and formed a religious stakeholder committee to provide input on this space in the design phase. One of the main goals when discussing this designated room was to create a space that “offends no one and welcomes everyone” and this does just that.
Nursing Room
The Nursing Room is a functional, private, peaceful, and clean space for mothers to breastfeed or pump. It has a baby changing table and sink, as well as a quiet space with a comfortable chair and table. It’s perfect for mothers on-the-go.
SEA Airport has prioritized nursing rooms and suites throughout the airport: a suite in the N Concourse, a room by Gate D1, and another room that is pre-security at the north end of the main terminal by Security Checkpoint 6. The newest room in the CCE is located on the Third Floor by the Sensory Room and Interfaith Prayer and Meditation Room.
Pet Relief Area
Restrooms are essential for humans and their pets and service animals. SEA Airport has a number of Pet Relief Areas for your furry friends and canine companions traveling through the airport. The C Concourse has a brand-new Pet Relief Area located on the main Concourse Level back by the main restrooms.
Companion Care Restrooms
These spacious and private restrooms are available to people needing assistance from a caregiver or companion. Many of the Companion Care Restrooms come equipped with adult changing tables.
C Concourse offers two Companion Care Restrooms on the Concourse Level, and another on the Third Floor near the Lookout at C. There are similar facilities located on all concourses at SEA, and more are being added wherever possible.
