How to Spend a Summer Day at Shilshole Bay Marina

As a city on the water there are plenty of ways to stay cool and catch some rays during summer in Seattle. And the good news is you don’t need to own a boat to enjoy a day on the water. This summer, head to Shilshole Bay Marina — home to over 1,400 monthly and live aboard moorage customers in the Ballard neighborhood, a mile-long public waterfront promenade, and fishing pier. Operated by the Port of Seattle, Shilshole Bay Marina is one of the largest recreational boating facilities in the Pacific Northwest and a gateway to Puget Sound.

Whether you're setting sail, paddling out, or just watching the boats go by with an ice cream in hand, Shilshole Bay Marina is the place to be. Here’s how to spend a carefree day at Shilshole Bay Marina.

Fuel up 

Start your day at the cozy and beloved Jibe Café, which has been a neighborhood staple since it opened in 2015. Get your day going with their Brekky on a Bun or try the flavorful breakfast burrito — packed with eggs, cheese, bacon, green chiles, and a chili lime kick. Pair it with an iced lavender oat latte (or your caffeinated beverage of choice!) and soak in the marina views. Bonus: They’re open seven days a week, so your morning ritual is always ready.

Set sail

If you’re in the mood to chase the wind, check out Seattle Sailing Club or Windworks Sailing and Powerboating and enjoy stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, wildlife (like seals at the breakwater!), and easy access to open water and wind just minutes from the docks. These clubs, which both operate out of Shilshole, offer everything from lessons to access to sleek charter boats to membership programs that suit a variety of interests, within a community of fellow boating enthusiasts. 

Windworks Sailing and Powerboating Club 

Once you complete the required US Sailing certifications, you can charter from Windworks’ fleet for a day, weekend, or week — giving you the experience of having your own boat without owning one. 

Or if you want to kick back with an expert leading the way, take a private skippered charter out for a half or full day as you explore Seattle and Puget Sound. Enjoy the sights or take your turn at the helm with the skipper nearby for guidance! Or get out on the water as a crew member as part of the club.  

Seattle Sailing Club

Ready to learn the ropes? Seattle Sailing Club offers sailing lessons for both beginners and experienced sailors, with American Sailing Association-certified courses taught from its Shilshole Bay Marina location. Once you’re ready to set out on your own, club members can access a fleet of sailboats for day sails and overnight adventures.

Drop a paddle 

If kayaking or paddleboarding is more your speed, head to W Dock and get out on the water with Ballard Kayak. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore at your own pace, or join a guided tour like a two-hour Sound paddle or a Sunset on the Sound adventure.

Stock up before setting sail

Before heading out on the water, swing by the Shilshole Bay Fuel Dock. They’ve got all the essentials: marine fuel, snacks, drinks, ice cream, even bait for fishing fans. It's your one-stop shop for a successful outing at sea — or at least a very well-fed one.

Sweet treats and sunset views

Cap off your day with an ice cream cone from Little Coney, a casual waterfront favorite serving hot dogs, chowder, and milkshakes. Pro tip: Get the chocolate and vanilla swirl for the best of both worlds! For an extra pep in your step add espresso and make it an affogato. Take your treat to-go and stroll along the promenade, or head down to Golden Gardens Beach. With bonfire pits and panoramic views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains, it’s the ultimate sunset spot.
