The Port of Seattle congratulates The Port of Tacoma for a century of service to Tacoma and Pierce County. On November 5, 1918, the voters in Pierce County approved the formation of a public port. We pay tribute to the vision and hard work of the current and former commissioners and employees of the Port of Tacoma who helped turn 240 acres of barren tideflats into a vibrant and prosperous global gateway.
Trade has always been a way of life for the people who made their home along Northwest waterways.*
Once historic rivals, the Port of Seattle and Tacoma have joined together as an economic engine for the entire region. On August 4, 2015 the marine cargo operating partnership was formed as the The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) . This innovative alliance forged a new era of cooperation between the two ports. Together, the two ports are the fourth-largest container gateway for containerized cargo shipping between Asia and major distribution points in the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and the East Coast.
Congratulations to the Port of Tacoma. Even though you’ve hit the century mark, you don’t look a day over 85!
