Protecting the Air, Land, and Sea

In an ongoing quest to become the greenest port in North America, the Port of Seattle is committed to developing renewable energy sources and to meet all increased energy needs through conservation and renewable sources.

These initiatives below are just a small sample of recent projects that are protecting our air, land, and water and moving the Port closer to its goals to:

Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 15 percent by 2020
Decrease GHG emissions by 50 percent by 2030
Become carbon neutral or negative by 2050

Heating the SEA terminal with renewable fuel to heat reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent in 2021 - 9 years ahead of schedule.

Recycling 95% of construction waste from North Satellite build.

Generating 120,000 kWh of renewable electricity with solar panels on Port facilities.

Assessing capital projects against a sustainability framework.

Creating a 13-acre habitat restoration and waterfront park.

Forming an environmental justice working group.

Collaborating with regional and international ports to reduce the impacts of large vessels on Orcas.

Becoming the first port to join the International Ocean Acidification Alliance.

Planting native oysters and kelp to remove carbon from the environment.

Purchase carbon off-sets for your flight.

Recycle your waste at home and at the airport.
