Under the Conditional Sailing Order, cruise lines and ports need to comply with new technical guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on April 2. Depending upon those requirements, and approval from CDC, cruise lines may be able to offer cruises from Seattle towards the end of our 2021 season. Commissioner Ryan Calkins writes that "Runaway wildfires, ever more powerful hurricanes, and sea-level rise displaces communities and threaten to make wide swathes of land uninhabitable. Social inequities mean that the impacts of climate change disproportionately impact underserved communities, particularly those closest to essential transportation services. The Northwest Ports of Vancouver, BC, Seattle, Tacoma, and the combined container operations of The Northwest Seaport Alliance, are jointly committing to a new vision to phase out emissions from seaport-related activities by 2050. In a collaboration among the four ports, the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy seeks to meet this target through changes in equipment, fuels, and infrastructure, supporting cleaner air for local communities and fulfilling the ports’ shared responsibility to help limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
