Summer Workshops Help Firms Get Certified

July 14, 2022

The Port of Seattle, in partnership with the Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE), hosted the first of two Summer Certification Workshops on June 29, 2022 at the Tukwila Community Center. 21 participants attended the event, in which they were able to:

  • Learn more about the benefits of getting certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), Minority/Women Business Enterprise (MBE, MWBE, WBE), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise for concessionaires located at airports (ACDBE), or Small Business Enterprise (SBE)
  • Better understand the different certification types and the application process for each
  • Receive hands-on assistance for beginning and/or completing their certification application

Many construction projects that use federal funds have a requirement that a certain percent of the total contract value of a project must be awarded to DBEs. The Port of Seattle is no exception as the SEA International Airport receives funds from the Federal Aviation Administration for its construction projects. The Port of Seattle recently announced its fiscal years 2023-2025 preliminary goal of 22.3% for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) airport construction projects.

Additional businesses receiving DBE certification through workshops like these mean that the Port of Seattle will be more likely to meet its preliminary 22.3% DBE goal. More importantly, it means that each business that obtains DBE certification is then able to compete for work that is just designated for DBEs, which they would not be able to do if they did not have the certification.

Increase your competitiveness, and help us reach our DBE goal.
Register for the next Summer Certification workshop on July 20, 2022.
