Life & Disability Insurance

Note: Employees represented by a labor union should refer to their collective bargaining agreements for information on life and disability insurance.

Basic Life

The Port provides a Basic Life insurance benefit of twice the employee’s annual salary rounded up to the next $100 increment to a maximum of $600,000 without requiring evidence of medical insurability.

Dependent life insurance is also provided at $1,000 per eligible family member.

Employees wanting to avoid taxable income from the Port-provided Basic Life benefit can elect $50,000 of coverage in lieu of coverage equaling two times annual salary. Should this option be elected, the employee would need to provide evidence of insurability if an increase in coverage is requested in the future, and coverage would then be subject to approval by the insurance company. Please refer to HR's Compass site for more information.

Voluntary Additional Life

Employees who are covered by the Port-sponsored Basic Life insurance policy may purchase voluntary additional life insurance for themselves, and/or spouses or domestic partners. You may request an additional flat $50,000, or an additional 1x or 2x your annual earnings.

Evidence of insurability is required and coverage is subject to approval by the insurance company. Apply by completing the Medical History Statement form and Life Insurance Enrollment form linked below.

If the application is made within 30 days of the date of hire, $50,000 of guaranteed issue coverage for the employee will be provided and $25,000 of guaranteed issue coverage for the employee’s spouse or domestic partner will be provided, even if the employee or partner is denied a higher amount of coverage.

Basic Accidental Death & Dismemberment

The Port provides a benefit of twice the employee’s annual salary rounded up to the next $1,000 increment due to accidental death or dismemberment.

Voluntary Additional Accidental Death & Dismemberment

Employees who are covered by the Port-sponsored Basic Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance policy may purchase additional voluntary accidental death and dismemberment insurance for themselves and/or dependents in increments of $10,000 to a maximum of $100,000.

Long Term Disability

The Port provides Long-term Disability insurance with a monthly benefit equal to up to 60 percent of an employee’s monthly base salary, including any shift differential pay. The benefit waiting period is 90 calendar days, or the exhaustion of the employee’s sick leave, whichever is longer.
