EMS Week - May 21-27, 2023

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is one of the busiest airports in the United States, with more than 45 million passengers going through the airport in 2022. With such a massive volume of people passing through its gates, it is inevitable that medical emergencies will occur. That's why Port of Seattle Fire Department’s EMTs play such a vital role in keeping travelers safe.

These EMS crews are comprised of highly trained professionals who are equipped to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. They work closely with airport security and other first responders to provide prompt and effective medical care to passengers and airport staff.

One of the most important roles of Port of Seattle Fire Department at SEA is to respond to medical emergencies on commercial flights. When an emergency occurs, the pilot will contact air traffic control, who will then alert the airport's EMS crew to prepare for the plane's arrival. The EMTs are ready and waiting when the plane lands.

In addition to responding to in-flight emergencies, the fire department provides medical care to passengers and workers who may become ill or injured in the airport terminals and other airport property. They respond to a wide variety of calls ranging from illnesses to major car accidents.

Port of Seattle Fire Department responds to an average of more than 3500 medical calls per year.

Hundreds of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are placed throughout the airport and Port properties. These AEDs are designed to provide immediate assistance to those who may be experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. They have been used multiple times and were key to the survival of the patient. The Port of Seattle Fire Department manages the program to keep these devices in place and in working order. This is another way that the fire department is ensuring that travelers and airport staff stay safe.

The EMTs at Port of Seattle Fire Department also train for disasters that we hope will never occur. They undergo special training each year for mass-casualty responses for aircraft accidents, natural disasters, and active shooter scenarios.

The importance of the firefighter EMTs at SEA cannot be overstated. Their quick response times and expert medical care have saved countless lives over the years. They are an essential part of the airport community, and their dedication and professionalism are greatly appreciated by everyone who works at or passes through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Travelers can rest easy knowing that they are in good hands when they visit SEA.

Thank you to all of the EMTs and paramedics that take care of us when we need it the most.
